Mobile Newspaper’s Tassie Connection

8th July 2008

Australia's first 'mobilised' newspaper has hit the streets thanks to the revolutionary new mobile phone technology introduced by Mocom, a joint venture of Tasmanian telecommunications company, BBW Telecom and Mitchell Communication Group.

The technology is being used by News Ltd'scommuter newsheet, MX, to offer editorial and advertising on mobile phones.

BBW Telecom Managing Director, Paul Truscott, said the development highlights how technology is revolutionising the way we access media content and advertising.

"People have an increasing desire for more innovative and interactive ways to consume media and advertising.

"With over 20 million mobile handsets in Australia, Mocom provides an extremely attractive way for marketers to interact with consumers in 'real time'.

"People can take a photo of an advertisement in one of the magazines with their mobile phone and instantly receive information on the product and offers.

"Advertisers will also be able to send to consumers other items, such as TV commercials, mini-movies, screensavers and internet links, in order to broaden the initial print advertising campaign.

Mr Truscott said he expects "mobilised" newspapers and magazines to be particularly popular with Generations Y and X.

"Young people are very digitally engaged and already use their mobile phones to access information, socially network and play games.  Accessing editorial and advertising on their mobile phones is the next step made possible by Mocom."

Mr Truscott said BBW Telecom's leadership role through Mocom to bring leading edge mobile applications to Australia highlights the clever and dynamic industries currently based in Tasmania.

"BBW Telecom is proudly 100% Tasmanian owned and draws on Tasmanian talent and expertise.

"This development demonstrates how a Tasmanian company can successfully compete in the global telecommunications market and bring innovative new technologies to Australia."

Mr. Truscott said BBW Telecom would continue to seek new national and international business opportunities as well as servicing the telecommunications needs of local Tasmanian businesses and organisations.
